Time’s Ticking, Ticking, Ticking…. WCWF Writing Contest Closes In a Week…

Well, here we are nearing the middle of August and that of course can only mean one thing… You gotta get those entries in.

We all have stories to share.

I received validation from a writing contest several years ago. It was the Writer’s Digest Annual Contest. Back in those days (must’ve been around 2006), I received a letter of congratulations—I was like 89th out of thousands.

I have no idea how many letters they sent out but dang, it made my day.

Entering a contest can be scary, that’s why we chose really professional and thorough judges. They’ll treat all your entries with the respect they deserve.

I’ll probably throw out a couple more reminders this week.

So, come step through and get that story submitted…

Close date is August 15, 2021 @ midnight!

The Master Class…

Just the sound of “Master Class” sounds so daunting.

I always thought you had to be an experienced writer or expert to attend–you know…a “master”.

Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The idea of a master class is that it is longer in duration and usually more in depth on the subject at hand.

A Master Class is a place to learn from the best! They’re the “Master”.

For the Wine Country Writers’ Festival, Agent/CEO/Agency Owner SAM HIYATE will be presenting the 2.5-3 hour class via Zoom.

What a FANTASTIC opportunity to meet a top agent in the business and have the opportunity to ask questions. That is so exciting.

Wine Country Writers’ Festival Master Class will be held on Friday September 24, 2021 via Zoom. Time is yet to be determined but Sam will be joining us from Toronto so the class will start early enough so we’re not up all night.

There will be an opportunity to have your query letter anonymously critiqued by top literary agent Sam Hiyate. He will also take questions– so make sure you write down your questions.

**we ask that query letters be submitted a few days before the class**

Cost is only $20 to do a three hour class with a CEO and President of the very successful Toronto and Calgary based Literary Agency The Rights Factory.

Here is an overview of the Master Class. You don’t want to miss it.

What Publishers Want (and Authors Need):
Today’s literary marketplace remains a mystery. Often new writers ask themselves, what do I do next? How do I write a query letter that will stand out? What are editors really looking for? Most importantly, how do I know that my work is ready to be submitted? And when should I choose to perhaps Self-Publish?

Sam Hiyate will examine the publishing world in Canada, the U.S. and international markets in this 3-hour masterclass. What are the market’s needs, wants, trends and ‘must haves’? Come with your questions.

What are you waiting for? Move your writing to the next level and learn from the best. Register today.

There will also be limited pitch sessions available with Sam Hiyate on Saturday September 25, 2021 You must be registered to save a pitch spot. There is a cost of $25 for a six minute pitch.

To register please email wcwfestival@gmail.com

Payments will be accepted via e-transfer or PayPal.

What’s a “Blue Pencil?” How Will it Help Me?

A blue pencil (sometimes referred to as a red pencil) is a process by which you, the writer, submit up to 750 words of your work prior to the event so that a professional writer/industry person may look over it and then meet to discuss it with you.

During the session you’ll be able to discuss any issues or questions you have about your work.

The meetings are short, and because the pages have been previously provided, an immediate discussion can occur. It is meant to spur positive energy and may come in the form of corrections, suggestions, or opinions.

It is always good to have experienced eyes see your work as it can often be invaluable in moving it to the next level.

How you can prepare for your Blue Pencil Appointment:

  • submit your pages well in advance
  • have any questions ready that you want to ask
  • ask for professional opinions
  • leave the defensiveness at the door. It doesn’t help you.
  • be ready for this question: What is your book about? Practice a one minute answer–or even shorter. Include your genre, sub-genre, (ie: Fiction, genre: Romance, sub-genre: Young adult. If there are further descriptions then include like historical, LGBTQ, or Christian etc. The reader should not be surprised by such sub-genres) basic plot to pique interest. Think of this as your one minute pitch. Be as specific as possible.

Wine Country Writers’ Festival blue pencils will be offered on a first-come-first-served basis. You must first be registered. There is a $15 fee for a 12 minute blue pencil.

When you register please indicate whether or not you’re interested in a blue pencil.

If you have any questions please contact me at WCWFestival@gmail.com

What’s on the Virtual Agenda?

On the Presenters Page you’ll now see what workshop they’ll be doing

I looked at it and was flabbergasted that these workshops are FREE!

Whether you’re looking for a class on building a story, collaborative editing, building your brand–it’s all here. WOW!

Take a look and register soon. The space is limited.
